After a year-long hiatus, London-based seven piece Frances and the Majesties drop their mask with their self-titled return EP, Frances and the Majesties, released via Act Cool Records and available to stream from 6pm on Sunday, 31st of October. The five tracks, recorded at home during the lockdown, are a testament to a challenging time for music, an honest admission to the disheartenment of a canceled Moroccan tour that almost broke the band up.

Frances and the Majesties’ 60s influences return in this EP, but come dotted with surf guitar riffs, vocal elements of Italian female singer-songwriters of the 70s, such as Nada and Patty Pravo, and their distinctive modern psychedelia feel. A clarinet of almost medieval quality is a newly introduced sonority that compliments the band’s gnarly saxophone.

The result is a cinematic experience, aided by the DIY recording choices that place the songs right in the living room of the North London warehouse where they were conceived and recorded. It’s a work that speaks through its grainy texture, a crafted lo-fi production that strives for realism through the use of ambisonic and binaural recording technology. Frances and the Majesties latest EP is ultimately an attempt to recreate the feeling of a live performance, achieved with a subtle mix that mainly relied on microphone placement.
